Adult Services

Rivers of Hope is dedicated to helping all victims of family violence throughout Sherburne and Wright Counties.

Crisis Intervention
Always call 911 in an emergency. Rivers of Hope offers a crisis phone line seven days a week, 24 hours a day. For assistance or general information, call our Crisis Line.

Safety Planning
Advocates will help to create an individualized safety plan.

The safety plan may include a safe place to go during an argument; establishing a code word so that children, friends or other contact persons know when to call for help; teaching children how to keep themselves safe during family arguments; keeping cash on hand at all times; having a bag packed and ready to go; and knowing where to go if leaving becomes necessary. Based upon the situation, the plan may also include notifying school and work contacts of the situation; changing phone numbers; avoiding staying alone; screening calls; meeting a partner only in a safe public place; varying daily routines and routes; and teaching children what to do if the partner confronts them or contacts them.

Court Support
Advocates provide you with information and guidance throughout the legal and judicial process and may attend court hearings to offer support throughout this process.

  1. Order for Protection (OFP) An Order for Protection is a court order for the abuser to stop the abuse. Depending upon the specifics of the petition, an Order for Protection may require the abuser to stay away from your home, workplace, or your children’s school. If you decide to seek an Order for Protection, an Advocate will assist with the paperwork and may accompany you to court. The Advocate will help you prepare to appear in court, explain what is happening during the court proceeding, and help you understand what options are available.
  2. Harassment Restraining Order (HRO) A person asking for an Order for Protection must fit into one of the following relationship categories: boyfriend/girlfriend or ex-boyfriend/ex-girlfriend; spouse or ex-spouse; living together or having lived together; or having a child or unborn child together. If you do not fit into one of the relationship categories or have not been physically harmed, you may decide to apply for a Harassment Restraining Order. If you decide to seek a Harassment Restraining Order, an Advocate will be available to help and support you just as in an OFP process.
